HAVE YOU EVER FELT
LIKE YOU’RE IN THE
INSTEAD OF THE
BY SCOTT GOOD & GREG RICKER
F YOU WANT to reply
“YES” to this question,
you’re not alone. This
comment has been made
by more than a few people
in our industry of late asking why they spend so much time
and energy on technology instead of
their core business, which is selling.
When asked what they are spending time on, a common response is
building another custom software
interface to exchange data between
partners or from system to another.
What we need is a way for MGAs
to integrate their systems with the
carriers and let MGAs focus on what
they do best—selling and servicing
their clients. It’s good to hear “times
they are a changing,” and “the future
is now.” This initiative goes beyond
Data Standards; it provides a common way (via Web Services) for MGAs
to have a common way to bring the

their own systems.
As most are aware, an industry

In the fall of 2011, at the ACORD
Implementation Forum meeting in
Ft. Lauderdale, the carrier sub-group
was officially started with both of us
volunteering to co-chair the group.
Helping jump-start the efforts were
Thad DeBerry from Western World
Insurance Group and Brad Lontz
from Nautilus Insurance Group. The
group discussed our first goal, and
that was to build a proof-of-concept
for demonstration on stage at the
March 2012 AAMGA Automation
Conference, some 12 weeks out.
With the carriers lined up we
needed three vendors along with
three MGA’s with which to partner.
On the MGA front we engaged RPS,
FTP, and Jimcor Agencies. On the
vendor side we solicited from those
who were already using web services for rates and/or rating, and
