An Analysis of direct-to-consumer genetic testing
services and the liability risks Associated with them
With the turn of the 21st century, civilization has witnessed a vast expansion of
technology. These advancements have drastically changed multiple landscapes in
which the average consumer operates, one of those being health sciences. One of
the most controversial topics in modern science is the use of genetic material and
consumer's access to this material. Genetic services are now available to the average consumer, providing information on heredity traits, susceptibility to diseases,
ancestry, and many other components of an individual's health. This article focuses
on direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic testing services and how insurance must play
a large role in this unique science now - as well as in the decades to come.

Genetic testing services ensure consumers that, in exchange for a small sample
of their genetic material, the service company can provide information on the applicant's health. More specifically, a genetic test is, "[a]n analysis performed on human
DNA, RNA, genes, and/or chromosomes to detect heritable or acquired genotypes"
