This table cross-tabulates current titles (rows) with last-prior titles (columns).
Having asked for respondents' last-prior title, you can see not only where people come from title-wise, but also where they go next.
This table allows us to see what title changes are common and construct typical career ladders, such as the example in Table 5, p 28.
Color code:
Gray highlights the cells in which the last title held is the same as the current title. These cases are frequent because people change employers and
move to the same title, and the salary survey titles are generalities, lumping together groups of more precise titles. For example, a department
manager and a plant manager will both show up as manager in our results.
Changes in which one's generalized title doesn't change are common, so they are ignored in assigning the other color highlights.
Orange highlights the most-common next title for each given prior title, if that most common is manager.
Pink highlights, for each prior title, the most-common next title that is not manager. If there is no orange in a column, the pink is highlighting the
most-common next title.
Green highlights the most-common prior title for a given next title (next title here is the respondent's current title).
There are a few cells that are colored both pink and green.
