for organizations and who are also self-employed consultants, as
well as some who work exclusively as self-employed consultants.
These groups are shown in rows three and four of Table 1.
To look at earnings by these categories, we break out those
self-employed consultants who also work in regular employment by
whether their regular employment is part time or full time. We do
this by looking at the hours they work in an average week of regular
employment. If that hourly total is less than 35, they are deemed
part-time employees, otherwise, they're full time. The results are
shown in Table 2 for U.S. and Canadian respondents.
In nearly every year that we've broken respondents into these
groups, the professionals who work both as full-time employees
and self-employed consultants show remarkably high earnings in
their regular employment. Remember, correlation is not causation.
It's unlikely these people earn so much from their regular employers
because they also moonlight. A far greater explanatory factor is that
they moonlight because they have highly valuable skills that make it
well worth their while to work extra hours in self-employment.
Of course, this is not to say there's no causal link between self-employment and a high regular salary. After all, the extra hours and
breadth of experience taken on by those self-employed probably
