About this issue
Issue theme: Managed Aquifer Recharge

Guest Editors: Michael E, Campana and Maria T. Gibson

Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) is the intentional recharge (typically by
infiltration basins or injection wells) of aquifers for later recovery or other
purposes. MAR has rapidly become an important tool in water managers'
portfolios, not only in the USA but also around the globe. Given MAR's advantages
over surface storage of water the future will likely see more installations. We have
ten papers that illustrate the various facets of MAR. The first paper by co-editor
Michael E. Campana sets the stage with... childhood recollections? Frederick
Bloetscher provides an excellent overview and some history. Co-editor Maria
Gibson describes the regulatory environment that currently retards expansion
of MAR on a nationwide basis. Gordon McCurry weighs in with an upcoming
important publication: The ASCE-EWRI Standard Guidelines on Managed Aquifer
Recharge. Tim Parker discusses the California MAR scene and Nienke Ansems
does the same for the global scene. Julianne Robinson at al. and Bob Mansfield
report on two small-scale MAR applications and Christopher Brown notes how
MAR can provide some measure of water treatment. In the last paper Michael E.
Campana speculates on the possibility of using MAR to store glacial meltwater.
