aBa chairman’s view BY MATT WILLIAMS ABA’s indispensable alliance W “As members of state associations and the ABA, banks receive the Best of Both Worlds” Matt williaMs Chairman and President, Gothenburg State Bank, Gothenburg, Neb. 4| ABA BANKING JOURNAL | April 2013 ith summer coming on soon, we are getting close to the “state convention season.” Coming from Nebraska, I enjoy all the seasons: summer, winter, spring, and fall; but especially football season. One of the great joys of being an ABA officer is traveling around our magnificent country, attending state bankers association conventions. These gatherings give us the opportunity to witness, firsthand, what bankers are doing to support their customers, communities, schools, hospitals, and churches. No matter where we travel, bankers are great people who are committed to doing what’s right and making a difference. This is a great reminder to me about the importance of our industry: We are truly indispensable. There is something else that is indispensable, and that is the Alliance of State Bankers Associations. As a community banker from the middle of Nebraska, I believe the importance of strong third-party relationships has never been more evident. At our bank, for instance, we rely on our core processor, various consultants, and professionals. But no third-party relationship is more important than our membership in our state bankers association. In our case, we depend on the Nebraska Bankers Association (NBA) to help us with training and educational needs; provide us with great products to help us serve our customers and our employees; and, of course, provide a high level of advocacy. The NBA helps give us the tools we need to succeed. The ABA also serves as a valuable partner, providing additional training and education, products, and highly effective advocacy at the national level. Without our state associations and the ABA, our industry would suffer. Over the years, the term “alliance” has been used to describe the relationship between the state associations and the ABA. I like to call it the “indispensable alliance.” The relationship between our state associations and the ABA is intertwined in such a way that as members, we receive the best of both worlds. The state associations and the ABA depend on each other for strength. Both are clearly member-driven—being guided by boards of directors made up of bankers. Over the years, I have had the good fortune of meeting nearly all the state association executives. This group is made up of men and women who are committed to our industry. They are bright, hard-working, and unrelenting in representing the needs of their members. Some years ago, I had the joy of serving as chairman of the NBA. This was clearly a stepping stone to my service at the ABA. NBA President and CEO George Beattie not only served as my teacher, but also as my mentor and coach. He became, and is today, one of my closest friends. I will always be grateful to him for how he helped shepherd my path. Thanks, George! I’m sure many of you enjoy a similar relationship with your state’s executive. I look forward to visiting many of you this year at your state convention. Banking is always changing, but the one constant is the people—people who choose to be bankers. Be proud of what you do. You make a difference. n
