student to see if some short term intensive
work can make a difference, before the
student is referred to an outside agency
where access to a service can take time
and is limited in its frequency. The service of a school counsellor can act as
a bridge to that service; if and when it
becomes necessary.

Look at your LOCAL job
description and related
policy regarding school
counselling.

Many of these documents are in need
of revision and school counsellors NEED to
be at the front of that work. If you do not
ask to be involved in that process, it is likely
you will not be involved. One preliminary
step I would take would be to convene a

district meeting of your colleagues and
union representatives BEFORE you meet
with your board office representatives.
Presenting yourselves as a cohesive group
gives you group strength and influence
over these documents.

Remind yourselves that a large part of
the last round of bargaining was focused
on increasing access to specialist teachers who could engage in one-on-one
support for students with special needs.
While I agree the SEL opportunities-at
all grades-are important and could be
considered part of the continuum of service provided by school counsellors, SEL
has NEVER been considered the exclusive providence of a school counsellor. In
fact, in many jurisdictions school counsellors have been teaching the program to
classroom teachers and then supporting the teachers in the implementation.
Counsellors then support those students
for whom the program is NOT making
a difference.

Seek support to exercise
your professional
autonomy.

Consider for a moment an administrator from any level of the system TELLING a
Math teacher they MUST use the FLIPPED
classroom approach as the exclusive
instructional approach. My belief and
experience has been the math teacher(s)
would resist and insist that their LOCAL
defend their professional autonomy to do
what is right for the context their work.

Make a presentation to
the BOARD OF TRUSTEES

School Trustees are an incredibly influential group of community
leaders who are charged with directing
Superintendents to do what is best for
students. This group makes decisions
based on the information that is available to them, so give them some information. Group presentations, where you can
describe the day/week/month in the life
of a school counsellor, have been known
to be most effective. The group nature
of the presentation allows each of you to
preserve the privacy of the stories that
you would share.
