Maintaining Your Enthusiasm for Helping
While Fighting the Winter Doldrums
BY BARBARA ZANG

Here's another idea to beat the winter doldrums-
read your way into a world of learning.
Winter doldrums or outdoor play land-
which one fits you? When clocks around
B.C. switch from daylight saving time to
standard time, the sun sets earlier which
makes the days seem shorter and darker.
Some regions of the province don't switch,
and Premier John Horgan has encouraged
citizens to send him an email message voicing their preference on time. The invitation
makes one wonder just how many messages he received.
This issue focuses on working with
younger children where there is more
play and less talk. Working with young
children can be as much fun for the therapist engaged as with their client, with both
benefiting from the activity.
B.C. teachers set a record in October
2017, when 6,000 of them came together
for the BCTF PSA Superconference. So many
attended that several keynote speakers
were needed to accommodate everyone.
Inside, you will find a couple of workshop

summaries as either a hint at what you
missed, or a reminder of what you learned.
Twitter was busy with enthusiastic tweets
during the conference. And though many
of us come home fired up for change, it can
take some reminders to make those changes
really stick. Consider this your reminder.
Remember your enthusiasm for the
workshop and take another step on the new
road. If you didn't attend the conference,
check out some of the material provided
by speakers at the BCTF website (https://
teachbc.bctf.ca/), talk to colleagues who did
attend, and plan to attend the B.C. School
Counsellor's conference in Richmond in
October 2018.
I am pleased to have Dr. Madeleine De
Little author our feature article on using the
Satir Model in the Sand Tray. Dr. De Little
is a regular presenter at the B.C. School
Counsellor's conference and her workshops always fill quickly, leaving a demand
for more.

Help keep the winter doldrums at bay with
Lisa Baylis' article on awakening our wellbeing. Lisa spends much of her time helping
educators learn the techniques to stay well
whether through meditation, journals, yoga
or one of her various other ideas. It is important for counsellors to take care of their own
self in order to be available for our students.
Here's another idea to beat the winter
doldrums-read your way into a world
of learning.
If there's a book you've wanted to add to
your professional collection, it can be yours
for the amount of time it takes you to write
a review. Simply send a message to bcsca.
editor@gmail.com with your book title. Or,
maybe you learned something profound at
the conference, or have read the "best book
ever!" and would like to share your learning
with your provincial colleagues. Contact me
about writing for the magazine. I love to
hear from everyone. Enjoy this issue. bcsca.
