FATIgue:
How to Find Balance
For many counsellors, self-care does not come
naturally. We must take active measures to
overcome our tendencies to focus primarily on the
needs of others, and to learn how to self-nurture
and be more open to receiving care ourselves.
By Michelle Hamilton, M.Ed., CCC
School counselling is a challenging and
rewarding career for educators and professional counsellors, offering a never-ending
range of new students to work with, and
never a dull moment. However, the difficult
circumstances faced by many children
and youth today may leave counsellors

feeling helpless and disturbed by what
they see and hear. While school counsellors and their supervisors may recognize
the intense and often draining nature of
the work, they may not be aware of certain
unique risks to the helpers involved with
other people's stress and trauma.
