Ways to Maximize
THE BASICS, INSIGHTFUL TIPS AND PRACTICAL ADVICE

ivot Point International partners with cosmetology schools and salons throughout the
U.S. in its annual cut-a-thon and fundraising
efforts for the National Center for Missing
& Exploited Children (NCMEC). Since 1997,
Pivot Point has proudly supported NCMEC,
and its network of schools and salons have
raised more than $1 million.
For the past four years, Georgia Career Institute (GCI) has
participated in Pivot Point's nationwide NCMEC Cut-a-Thon and
has raised over $30,000 from its schools. For GCI's outstanding
efforts and contributions, it has received three Crystal Service
Awards from Pivot Point.
To encourage other schools to get involved (whether with
NCMEC and Pivot Point or a separate cause), GCI shares best
practices for hosting a fundraising event like no other, including
how to get started and its top 12 tips for maximizing results
and impacting your community.
Pick an organization or charity that you feel is
deserving of your time. Choosing a charity or organi-
zation that is close to your heart as a school will greatly
increase the success of your event. Consider surveying students
to understand what they're interested in.
Designate one person to be the event coordinator. This person will be the lifeline of your event
and will have a direct impact on the success or failure
of your cut-a-thon, so choose wisely. You want someone with
great energy and a lot of motivation to see the school succeed.
Plan a group meeting. This is where you will
decide all of your logistics. As a group, you will
need to decide what you are willing to invest
into the event: Will it be a one-day event or week-long event?
Will it be a month of campaigning? How much is the school
willing to invest in marketing materials, decorations, staff

time, etc.? You will also need to decide how much of the
service revenue the school is willing to donate on the day
of the event. Set realistic goals along with realistic budgets.
Many times, you will find that the actual cut-a-thon is the
final event to a lot of fundraising behind the scenes. You may
be surprised, but the majority of your funds raised will be
from outside donations.
Pick your date and time. For your cut-a-thon,
make sure the date complements the organization for which you are trying to raise funds. For
example, A cut-a-thon to benefit Toys for Tots should be held
around December. Typically, a cut-a-thon to benefit the NCMEC
would be held around May or June, as the month of May is
Missing Children's Month.
Start months in advance for donations. Many
businesses around you are willing to donate money,
but they must be convinced that your charity/event is
worthy. Start early and communicate with local businesses
about your goals and why you chose to get involved. Excitement
is contagious and many of these businesses will often donate
to your charity/event because of your excitement. Often, they
need some time to get their donations together (and sometimes,
approval from a corporate office). Larger corporations typically budget their donations at the beginning of the year, so
start asking early.
A donation can never be too small. Accept
what people are willing to give you. If a grocery
store is willing to donate ground beef, turn it into
a spaghetti luncheon for the students. Remember that donations do not always have to be monetary. Be resourceful and
creative with your fundraising strategies. Many people do not
like holding on to change, and simply putting a donation jar at
the front counter during the month of your event may greatly
help your cause.
