The eyelash extension industry has
existed in North America for about 10
years. At first, eyelash extensions were
a subset add-on service of the cosmetics
and esthetics industry. Today, although
usually regulated by State Boards of
Cosmetology, eyelash extensions are
available for licensed professionals to
pursue as a stand-alone career path. Many
men and women are making great money
and supporting their families solely
through their eyelash extension business.
Important distinctions should be made
between what are often referred to as
eyelash extensions (i.e., clusters, tabs,
flares or strips) and professional eyelash
extensions. Professional eyelash extensions are single-strand, synthetic lashes
applied lash for lash with precise isolation of each natural lash. They do not
touch the eyelid skin.
Following are some common questions
about professional eyelash extensions:
How long do they last?
An initial set of Professional Eyelash
Extensions can last indefinitely with touch
ups or fills every two to four weeks. Each
natural lash is on its own 60-90-day cycle
from beginning to end and as each one
sheds, the extension sheds with it.
Some Points for Beauty Schools
to Keep In Mind
Most states require individuals to be a licensed esthetician or cosmetologist in

As lash extensions have gained popularity, more students want to receive an
education from within their beauty school.
Applying eyelash extensions is a very difficult procedure and it can take years
to achieve ultimate proficiency. It is not a skill that can easily be taught out of

Do professional eyelash
extensions make your
lashes fall out?
Eyelash extensions alone do not make
natural lashes fall out. However, a poor
application can cause damage that will
lead the natural lashes to thin out and
break off over time.
Lash fallout is a major concern within
the industry. There is a difference between
someone who just "does lashes" and someone who is a properly trained, licensed and
insured eyelash extension professional.
To help support lash artists everywhere
and work toward educating consumers
on safety and sanitation, the National
Eyelash Education & Safety Association
(NEESA) was formed. NEESA is dedicated
to empowering and protecting the eyelash extension industry by encouraging
a supportive eyelash community through
progressive education, industry best practices and integrity. NEESA is a professional
trade association for the eyelash extension
professional and welcomes members from
all over the globe.
NEESA was proud to bring Lash Wars-
the first eyelash extension competition-
to IBS Las Vegas in June 2014! Judges,
sponsors, contestants and supporters from
around the world witnessed and participated in this monumental event. Lash Wars
included three competition categories:
Classic, Volume and Fantasy.
