A STUDENT'S PERSPECTIVE Beauty Changes Lives Recipient Pursuing More Accolades Student: School: Status: Study Area: Hobbies: "One of the best things about this industry is all of the different career opportunities available. I'm exploring all of the possibilities, but work in the creative production area is definitely on my horizon." Robert Miller Avenue Five Institute 2014 graduate Cosmetology Robert is a prolific journaler and loves the arts. He has a strong interest in the local and natural foods movement. a 2014 graduate of Avenue Five Institute in Austin, Texas, has cultivated a taste for competition. The winner of a 2013 Vidal Sassoon Professional Beauty Education Scholarship Program tuition scholarship, Miller has set his eyes on winning a PBA Beacon Award this summer. Presented during PBA Week in Las Vegas each July, Beacon awards provide the nation's most promising cosmetology students with opportunities to network and learn from premier stylists and NAHA finalists. ROBERT MILLER, Earning His Stripes Miller completed his 1,500 state-required hours in about 11 months while also working at an allnatural food cooperative. In addition to school and work, he continued to explore his creative interests in film and journaling, while preparing to take his State Board Exam. "It's a little bit daunting to realize the test pool includes 2,000 questions from which 500 questions will be selected, but I'm feeling really good about the exam," he said. Winning the Beauty Changes Lives Vidal Sa ssoon Professiona l Beauty Education Scholarship Program in 2013 opened Miller's eyes to other opportunities that exist for professional development, including the PBA Beacon Award. He said the staff of Avenue Five Institute were instrumental in encouraging him to apply for both awards, and he believes mentors at the school level can play a strong role in boosting a young hairstylist's career. Educators Are Encouragers Does your school have a student you'd like us to interview for a future "A Student's Perspective" in BeautyLink? Write to us at 26 "I had a phenomenal mentor in Terri Christian who encouraged me to apply for the Beauty Changes Lives scholarship shortly after I enrolled. She was always around to offer her advice, encourage me and motivate me to try taking it to the next level," he said. He also credited Avenue Five Institute's Director of Operations Teddy Romero with encouraging him to see the value in reaching for additional awards. "Teddy helped me see that PBA Beacon | B E A U T Y L I NK | BAL *ANCE | 2014 is a very worthwhile competition not just for the honor, but for the publicity, networking opportunities and added credibility the award offers to new hairstylists," he said. Miller is also encouraged by how his family's support for his career path has strengthened since winning the scholarship. When he spoke with BeautyLink last summer after winning the competition, he noted that some of his family did not consider beauty as a serious career choice. Miller has chosen to educate them about the opportunities available in the beauty industry and his sincere passion for the career. "I've talked to my family and loved ones about all of the career possibilities and kept them appraised on my career. They know that I'm proud and excited to be following this career path and are supportive of my goals," he said. Looking to the Future Speaking of goals, Miller is focusing his sights on careers in the production and entertainment arena. He is networking with professionals in the entertainment field as well as union authorities. The popularity of fantasy-themed productions is especially appealing. "I'm intrigued by fantasy themes and am encouraged by the popularity of Game of Thrones and other fantasy productions," he said. "One of the best things about this industry is all of the different career opportunities available. I'm exploring all of the possibilities, but work in the creative production area is definitely on my horizon." Hopefully a PBA Beacon Award is on his horizon, too.
