Your superstar could be featured in the next issue of BeautyLink! 48 Cheyanne Birchall: Fueling Inspiration in the Nail Industry STEPPING OUT OF her comfort zone is becoming habit for Cheyanne Birchall, a December 2013 graduate of Marinello Schools of Beauty and a 2012 Beauty Changes Lives Celeb Mentor Competition winner. When Cheyanne's instructor told her about the scholarship and mentoring competitions, her first response was to say no. "The idea of capturing a video and uploading it was intimidating to me," Cheyanne said. Fortunately, her instructor didn't take no for an answer. "She really pushed me to see that if I didn't open the door, other doors might not open in my future," Cheyanne recalled. Since that moment, Cheyanne has walked through one door after another, pursuing her goal of eventually traveling the globe as a CND Education Ambassador. Her first career travel opportunity occurred while she was still a student. As a BCL mentorship winner, Cheyanne traveled to Detroit to assist the CND team at the Motor City Beauty Buzz. The opportunity turned out to be a networking bonanza for Cheyanne as her passion for the career shone through to CND's team. CND educator Jan Zanettini has continually kept in touch with Cheyanne, alerting her to learning experiences. In spring 2013, Cheyanne traveled to Chicago where she participated in America's Beauty Show. A few months later she appeared onstage in Las Vegas with CND at the AACS Spring Conference in a Beauty Changes Lives presentation. Her visibility caught the eye of beauty and wellness media and Cheyenne has been featured in Modern Salon/ First Chair, American Salon and NAILS Magazine. Cheyanne frequently turns to traditional and social media to fuel her inspiration. "I read Nail Pro, Nail It, and NAILS Magazine to get ideas. Then I pull the looks I like and create sample nails to display at the Reno, Nevada, salon where I work," Cheyanne said. She also turns to Pinterest and Instagram to help spark design ideas, but says that listening to customers is an important part of creativity. "Sometimes someone will be bring in a piece of vintage clothing or jewelry and ask me to create a design around it. I love working with the client to create a unique nail statement," Cheyanne said. Even the most accomplished professionals occasionally find times when the creative well runs dry. Cheyanne says it's important to work through those moments. "There are always puzzles and challenges, like a client whose nails won't hold product. I love trying to figure out how to find a solution," Cheyanne said. She advises students to realize that education does not stop in school and says that nail trade publications are a great tool for staying on top of developments in the industry. As she works toward her ultimate goal of being a CND Education Ambassador, Cheyanne has set her sights on some near-term steppingstones. In April, she participated in California's Wow event that introduces legislators to career opportunities in the beauty industry, while providing complimentary beauty services. She is also working toward completing CND Master Pro requirements to earn certification in various aspects of nail design. In 2015, she hopes to qualify for CND's Boot Camp, a week of intensive education. Cheyanne says energy is key to accomplishing her dreams, so she commits to personal fitness including hula hooping, jump rope and outdoor activities. "If I don't take care of myself, I can't fulfill my goal of helping others feel their best," she said.
