BE IN A CONSTANT
STATE OF WONDER

When presenting information you know backwards and forwards, you tend to lose
the perspective of a layperson. You don't
explain as much and get lazy with analogies and metaphors that can help a layperson connect with the information. The
best way to keep yourself from talking to
your learners like they are already insiders is to be an outsider. Stay in a constant
state of wonder by continuing to learn
something new that is not beauty related.
It doesn't have to be a one-week course; it
can be as simple as asking your teenager
to show you how to use an app. The idea
is to keep yourself in the shoes of your
students and develop a keen sensitivity
for the cues novices need to understand a
completely new endeavor.

2

INTENSELY FOCUS
ON LANGUAGE

How long does it take to
have a comfortable command of a new word or concept? There's
no one answer for everyone, but suffice
it to say it is longer than you think. As
educators, we must be aware of the lag
time between presenting a new word or
concept and each learner having confident command of that new information.
We often introduce new information and
incorporate it into the lexicon of the class
too quickly. New terms and concepts
should be explained every time they are
used until the class has comfortable command, otherwise we build new information on an unstable foundation of facts
that have yet to be fully understood. As
educators, you use words to facilitate
learning. If we are education artists, our
paint is language. We must take care to
explain more profusely and be acutely
aware of the fragile structure of information built in the learner brain as we
introduce more material.

3

PROVIDE A
DETAILED
ROAD MAP

The game of charades
begins with context. The number of words,
syllables, sounds, etc. is given before the
guessing even starts. Boundaries are
always established first. The boundaries limit the possibilities and give you
a better chance of guessing correctly.

Our very cells seem to scream, "get
to the point" multiple times a day.
Why? Because optimal time usage
has become the norm.
Providing clear context in the classroom
is a way to steer the learner's brains into
the right lane. Achieving visual context
with conceptual mapping is a great tool,
but this can also be combined with verbal
devices and grouping to establish a base
for understanding. When you describe
someone as a dog person or cat person,
you know what that means immediately.
Obviously, the entire spectrum of human
personality cannot be relegated into dog
or cat, but the oversimplification provides
a foundation to build more complex concepts upon. Hair for example can be introduced as two parts: what's above the skin
(visible) and beneath the skin (invisible).
Of course, there's more to explain about
the root and shaft, but context created
by dividing hair into the seen and unseen
is something learners of all levels can
relate to.

EDIT THE AMOUNT
OF INFORMATION
YOU PRESENT

Coco Chanel famously
recommended we take a look in the mirror and remove at least one item before
leaving the house. Simply put, if it doesn't
need to be there, get rid of it. The look in
the mirror forces you to identify purpose,
in Chanel's case the purpose of the outfit. The removal of items brings the focus
back to the purpose. Clutter is distracting
and wastes valuable time. Whether it is
too many accessories or too much excess
information, clutter lures our attention
away from the purpose of an exercise.
Our primary focus should be centered on
what is most significant. The whole of the
online experience is catered to what is
most significant to us, our interests. The
information we search for is used to create
ads and give us more of what we want. All
you need to do is scroll through someone's
Netflix queue to see where their real interests lie. This is the world of Millennials,
feedback loops, editing, and constant selfselection. If we want to keep their attention, the information we present should be
just as precise.

REVIEW BY
STRESSING
CAUSATIONS

There's a difference
between knowing a person and knowing
their family. Once you meet someone's family, another dimension of that person opens
to you. What you know isn't just floating
around in its own information pod, you
begin to make links between the past and
present. The connections give insight into
their behavior and motivations. Millennials
have always had connections clearly made.
Did you ever have a playdate? Probably not,
after school you made your own friends in
your neighborhood and your "playdate" was
simply "after your homework." You decided
who you would befriend or not. Millennials
grew up with scheduled playdates that
required a car ride with children of parents their parents had already established
a relationship with. Millennials didn't plan
with kids that their parents didn't already
have a CV on. Connections were made previously to assure they remained in similar
social groups before they even entered preschool. Millennials have always had the
connections spelled out for them. Stressing
causations between information is essential
for Millennials; not only stressing what this
new information means, but how it relates
to and affects one another. Review is not
only a call and response, but a reveal of the
relationships between topics.
The good news is that we have more
in common with Millennials each day
because we all adapt to the constant
advances in technology together. We also
have early Millennial colleagues to give us
insight into their peers and the Generation
Z learners who are quickly approaching our
classrooms. The classroom of the future is
efficient, collaborative and dynamic. See
you there!
