MAKES YOUR SCHOOL
EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION BEAUTY
SCHOOL RECOGNITION PROGRAM
BY BEAUTYLINK STAFF
Providing Great Education?
Then You Need to Apply. Here’s why.
ou’ve heard the saying, “What makes you different makes you beautiful.” The same wisdom also applies to your beauty school. The
Excellence in Education Program was created
by Modern Salon Media in partnership with the
American Association of Cosmetology Schools to
provide schools of all sizes with an opportunity to be recognized
for what their own excellence and what sets them apart.
to build credibility with prospects and employers. “We created a
special edition of our eNewsletter specifically on our recognition,
and we shared the good news with both prospects and the salon
community that hires our students,” said Lynelle Lynch, president
and owner of Bellus Academy. Bellus also developed a news release
to share with local print, broadcast and online media.
The schools above represent just three of more than 50 overall
honorees from the program. The program is set up to offer all
schools a chance to be recognized in their category.
Going Beyond Recognition
While there are huge marketing benefits to being able to showcase your recognition, Excellence in Education honorees say the
biggest rewards aren’t certificates, but being able to identify and
define what really makes their schools special.
Ogle School of Hair, Skin and Nails in Arlington, TX, received
the Modern Salon Excellence in Education award for “placement”
in the multi-unit category. “We use the distinction as a means of
setting us apart from the competition. We’ve found that the award
is very effective when it comes to addressing students’ concerns
about finding a job after they earn their license,” said Jeff Chiarelli,
director of marketing for Ogle Enterprises, LP. Ogle has integrated
the award into an admissions department PowerPoint presentation and press releases.
Angela Watson, director of public and media relations at Empire
Education Group, in Pottsville, PA, says her school has used its
“school culture” award to boost internal audiences’ pride. “Not only
did we immediately benefit from the media coverage in Modern
Salon by generating exposure in the professional community, but
we also created promotional signage inside our school, letting
students and staff take pride in the honor,” she said. Empire also
reached out to its prospects by placing posts on its social media
pages and promoting the award on its website.
As a recipient of the “technology” distinction for multi-unit
schools, Bellus Academy in Poway, CA, leveraged its recognition
Details About the Excellence in Education Program
The program is broken down between single location and multiunit cosmetology schools and then on student body size: 126 or
more students, 76–125 students and less than 75 students, meaning
that you are recognized for the segment in which you fit.
Recognition is provided in the following categories: marketing,
technology, facilities, school culture, placement, advanced education, Beauty Changes Lives program integration and community
According to Steve Reiss, publisher of Modern Salon Media, the
Excellence in Education Program highlights all the wonderful
things that schools are doing, and it helps legitimize the value
that schools are providing across the entire professional salon
community that Modern Salon reaches via its wide range of print
and online communications.
From a recruitment and placement standpoint, the program
also creates a point of differentiation that schools can leverage
Reiss says that schools benefit from entering even if they are
not selected as an honoree. “Several school owners have told me
that simply going through the application process was a great
exercise for their teams. The process helped them think through
their points of differentiation and articulate what sets their program apart from other cosmetology schools,” Reiss said.
