Battle of the STRANDS THE PROJECT RUNWAY FOR STYLISTS BY BEAUTYLINK STAF D ubbed the Project Runway for Stylists, the Battle of the Strands is a one-ofa-kind competition that brings together the "full package" of hair, makeup, nail and fashion artistic creativity into a single competitive event. Teams of stylists from the professional salon community- and for the first time, from cosmetology schools-will compete in a high-stakes competition that reaches the pinnacle on October 6, in Las Vegas. Contestants will use their creative muscle, skill, talent and chutzpah to create current wearable trends, couture and avant-garde looks. The winner will be selected by a panel of beauty and fashion experts including Kim Vo, winner of the 2011 Battle of the Strands and a judge on the hit television series Shear Genius, YouTube makeup artist sensation Kandee Johnson and Kelly Donahue, editor in chief of American Salon, along with other high-profile salon owners, platform artists and educators. Qualifying events for the salon competition were held at IBS New York, America's Beauty Show and the Premiere Beauty Show this spring. Additionally, a special student competition was held during the AACS Spring Operations Conference in Phoenix. Following the May 4 "battle," three student teams were selected to travel to Las Vegas for the final competition. Two student teams were selected by a team of judges and a third People's Choice team was selected based on attendees' voting in the conference exhibit hall. Student teams travelling to the finals are as follows: Avalon School of Cosmetology, Phoenix Campus Team First Class Demeanor created a look that tied into the competition's overall theme of "Avant Garde Meets the West." The team's hair and makeup effort was inspired by the metallic and matte earth tones of the Western U.S. The model's neutral-toned wardrobe reflected the texture of Midwestern plants. The Studio Academy of Beauty Team Edge members paid homage to Aztec and Native American cultures through makeup and hair that br ou g ht together "fierce and delicate" elements along with a three-foot headpiece and feathered costume. Avalon School of Cosmetology, Mesa Campus Team Zephyrus was inspired by elements of mythology and the sea to create a Goddess of the Pacific they described as "beautiful, dangerous and powerful." Shells, starfish and netting created a wardrobe evocative of a modern mermaid. While only three teams traveled on to the finals, Battle of the Strands spokesperson Kristina Lee said the judges were amazed and inspired by the creativity each student team brought to the competition. "From the makeup and wardrobe to the accessories and hair weaves, the students' inspired designs were executed with precision and artistry," she said. Creativity seemed to know no bounds. For example, one team's model boasted an impressive set of iridescent wings while another team created a textured "scaled" look by applying carefully colored cornflakes to the model's tights. AACS CEO Jim Cox said the competition shines the light on beauty careers in the creative environment including fashion, editorial and film/entertainment careers. "The Battle of the Strands competition reflects the intersection of hair, makeup and fashion," Cox said. The October 6 final battle in Las Vegas will take place on stage in front of media and a live audience. The good news is you don't have to be in Vegas to witness the spectacle.
