hen I was 18 years
old, I was one year
out of high school,
enrolled in beauty
school, engaged to be
married and planning
my future. I thought I had my whole life
ahead of me.
After graduating and becoming a
licensed Cosmetologist, I started planning my wedding. Two months before the
big day, I became quite ill and went to see
my doctor several times. He couldn't find
anything, and told me it was more than
likely just the "stress" of my busy schedule.
It became worse on my honeymoon,
so my new husband took me to the emergency room. There, they determined I
would need some diagnostic surgery. I
was in a strange state, no family or friends
with me other than my husband, and I
was really scared. Afterwards, they stabilized me, told me not to worry and sent
me home and told me they would let me
know if they found anything.
About two weeks later, I got a phone
call that would change everything for me.
The nurse at my doctor's office blurted
out that I had CANCER. And not only that,
"and, oh, it's a rare form that they didn't
really know how to treat, but, please schedule an appointment to come in and discuss
further with the doctor." I was stunned and
in shock. Can you imagine how I felt at that
moment? It was 1978 and the movie "Back
to the Future" was the movie of the time.
Remember when Marty went back in time
and started changing things in the future
