Motivating YOUR STUDENTS FACING THE REALITY OF STUDENT MOTIVATION AND RETENTION BY DR. JOE PACE I n the last issue of BeautyLink, I examined the importance of assuming an “intelligent heart” that taps into a student’s overriding vision and desired lifestyle change. In this issue, I’ll examine some practical approaches that can help schools improve their show rates and retention rates. My team has been experimenting with approaches to help students from the time of their initial interview to their first day of class. We place a special focus on keeping each student’s vision alive. There is always a period before the student start date that is sort of a holding pattern. Usually a school representative calls students and talks about how great the school is and the benefits and features it offers. My team is trying something new. We’re talking not about the school, but about each student’s vision and his or her desired lifestyle change. We tell all students to keep in mind what they’re going to get when they start classes. We ask them how it’s going and about what “rocks in the road” they may be experiencing. In some schools, I have seen the show rate improve between 5 and 8 percent. This approach also works for retention, increasing enrollment and retention from front door to back door. I work with a school that just improved 10 percent in retention and 8 percent in show rate, so they’re up 18 percent over last year. People do not change unless there is a synapse in the brain that comes from some form of emotion causing motivation.
