Cosmetology (including hair, skin and nails), barbering and even
massage therapy education is characterized by real-time, handson learning. Even State Boards crafted rules and regulations that
supported a blending of traditional (formal) education with the
mentoring of experienced professionals to teach students "this is
how we do it." This model has worked for a long time! Very little
was done with education other than creating test banks. Internet
access, mobile devices and social media exploded with GenY's
and GenC's addiction to their phones/tablets, Facebook, Twitter,
Pinterest and, oh yes - SnapChat!
As publishers, both Milady (Cengage) and Pivot Point
International have been the primary purveyors of quality cosmetology education support. Gerard McAvey shared that "Milady
launched one of the first online platforms, WebTUTOR, almost 17
years ago, and clearly "was early to the party." That has allowed
Cengage/Milady to evolve the tools now available to schools. Pivot
Point was a pioneer in offering a Learning Management System
(LMS) specifically tailored for undergraduate cosmetology programs. They piloted their first LMS called Artist Access in the fall
of 2011, followed by a full launch in January 2012. Through this
platform, their education was available anytime and anywhere to
students and teachers alike.
Milady started seeing the biggest shift during the last four to
five years, particularly when eBooks started becoming readily
available for students, and then additional online resources were
positioned along with them. Both publishers recognized that
from the start "it wasn't all rosy" and there were barriers to the
acceptance of these technological changes. The common threads
were the integrity of content and trusting that, with providing
support, the acceptance of new delivery methods would follow.
A recent entrant into the cosmetology education market, Today's
Class, also recognized that "online education enabled access to a
great deal of information, as well as material that previously was
available only in textbooks." They also recognized the teacher/
school challenge was in the transition from textbook-based education to online activity. All experts acknowledge the need to
overcome the LMS challenges for designing a product with enduser ease and educator/school customer support. In the traditional
model, the focus is on student education but it is truly the educator
that is the driver of the learning experience. The educator has a
steep learning curve to be proficient presenters of the new delivery
system, which competes for student time.
So what are the biggest differences with current learning styles
and technology in beauty education? With time, online material
is less expensive to deliver and is dynamic since it is easy to
update content. Of course, State Board required material remains
fairly consistent, so we find that even the updates are driven by
technological changes in products or tools and obviously style
and technique.
Sabine Held-Perez points out, "We are experiencing a power
shift in the learning environment. That might sound scary, but
I truly believe it is a win/win situation for learners, educators,
cosmetology schools and the industry as a whole." Rather than
putting the educator in charge of the entire education process,
the baton is passed to the student for active learning and critical thinking. The digital kits (as provided in LAB-Learn. About.
Beauty.; MindTap; Today's Class) each provide ease of access to
materials and accommodates the learning style needs of students
and educator support. These digital kits allow the instructor to
support the performance of the student as a coach and provide
more individual assistance. There's freedom to create a more

"student centered" learning environment, engaging students with
"flipped" classroom activities and games. Beyond the classroom/
clinic, learners are interactive with peers on collaborative assignments. Today, having access to these kits integrates technology
and provides ease of access to a plethora of germane and vetted
resources. Both, educator and student, have the freedom to explore
the best methods to achieve best results.

The Digital Kits
LAB-Learn. About. Beauty
LAB is an integrated learning environment that is developed for
the connected learner in the beauty industry. In LAB, all resources
pertaining to a topic are integrated in one place or lesson, and the
topics are smaller specific segments. This reduces the cognitive
load of learning. Each lesson is designed to touch on each of the
"mindframes" the brain naturally goes through when learning is
most effective. Learners are invited to explore, engage, experience
and expand each topic or hands-on workshop in LAB in a way
that is collaborative, creative and unintimidating. For ultimate
success in school and at State Board, LAB offers a comprehensive assessment strategy. Lesson Challenges at the conclusion
of theory lessons offer formative assessment to discover and
fill knowledge gaps. Other tools (Knowledge Builder, Exam Ace,
Gamification) enhance the experience of building a learning path
similar to building a playlist in a music library.  Many aspects
feel similar to social media where learning communities are very
active. Gamification is also present in LAB. All user engagement
is rewarded with points that add up and can result in a spot on the
leader board, always encouraging healthy competition.
In summary, LAB gives the users in its communities a place to
be home, to connect with others of their tribe, to create, share,
inspire and learn about beauty.

MindTap
Milady/Cengage has listened to the calls for a learning platform that builds and supports the educator/student relationship;
taking both educator and student feedback into consideration
over the years, ultimately delivering the highest quality resource
(MindTap) that both students and educators can't seem to get
enough of. Today, Milady's latest resource is MindTap. Currently
it is being used by thousands of students across the country in
both Cosmetology and Esthetics programs with Barbering and
Nail Technology soon to follow.  MindTap is an easy-to-use digital
platform, which is imperative in order to make the implementation
as easy as possible. Students can access their full eBook as well
as hours and hours of digital content and assessments, accommodating various learning styles, creating a mutually beneficial
experience for all involved.

Today's Class
Today's Class provides the convenience of finding specific
materials with speed. The access to testing enables practice for
certification, and a positive experience for students and educators. The industry has accepted the change and Today's Class
has been approved as a textbook by the NEC (NIC subcommittee) committee. Operationally, online providers will be in the
"cloud" and continually update content as technology/processes
change. To remain viable, Today's Class surveys instructors each
year to determine if the product is working and what teachers
would like to see in the future. Changes and improvements can
be made quickly.
