UNIQUE PARTNERSHIP CREATES PATHWAY
FOR INDIGENOUS STUDENTS

TO PURSUE CAREERS AS LEADERS
IN FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
By Patricia Debassige, Manager Education, AFOA Canada

T

he heightened focus on Indigenous issues and
initiatives in Canada is rapidly increasing the
demand for skilled leadership and expertise in
several professions. Critical amongst these is
the need for qualified individuals with financial expertise
to work within First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities
and organizations. This has created a multitude of
career opportunities for Indigenous students passionate
about contributing to and further strengthening finance,
management and leadership within their communities and
beyond. However, in the face of this high demand, the number
of students choosing to pursue accounting and financial
management careers has not kept pace. There is a serious
shortage of Indigenous students seeking to pursue these
opportunities.
To address this demand-supply crisis, two of Canada's
leading organizations representing the accounting and
financial management sector have partnered to create a
unique and efficient pathway for Indigenous students to
pursue financial management education and careers. These
partners are:
* AFOA Canada (formerly Aboriginal Financial Officers
Association of Canada), the national association that
helps Indigenous people better manage and govern
their communities and organizations through a focus
on enhancing finance and management practices and
skills, all under a premise that the key to successful selfdetermination, and a better future for the next generation
lies in improving the management skills of those
responsible for the stewardship of Aboriginal resources.
* The Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada
(CPA Canada), the body that oversees and regulates the
accounting profession in Canada.
AFOA Canada and CPA Canada have recently signed a
Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) calling for facilitated
access to, participation in, and success for Métis, Inuit
and First Nations students in the Canadian accounting
profession. Further, that MOU recognizes Indigenous culture

and history courses within Canadian accounting education.
Now, AFOA Canada and CPA Canada have established
the academic partnership to deliver on these important
objectives and to provide the means to begin closing the
gap between the demand for qualified individuals and the
number of Indigenous students following an accounting
education pathway.
Under this unique partnership, students first complete
a two-year post-secondary diploma in accounting or
business. They then continue online or in-class studies
toward the requirements of AFOA Canada's Certified
Aboriginal Financial Manager (CAFM) designation and CPA
Canada's Advanced Certificate in Accounting and Finance
(ACAF). Each certificate has some specific course and
examination requirements; however, considerable academic
efficiencies have been created through joint credits
between the CAFM and ACAF programs. Also, CPA Canada
recognizes several of AFOA's Indigenous specific history
and culture courses as electives in the ACAF requirements,
an exciting first for accounting education in Canada.
This efficient combination of an accounting diploma
with two highly regarded financial management and
accounting credentials (CAFM and ACAF) offers students
a truly unique foundation and knowledge base to advance
into successful Aboriginal leadership and financial
management roles.
AFOA Canada and CPA Canada are jointly launching
a test pilot offering of this partnership which is to also
include targeted career counseling and mentoring to
support Indigenous students' success. This is an exciting
opportunity for students to participate in this groundbreaking partnership and obtain the knowledge, expertise
and recognized credential to truly make important
contributions to their communities and organizations.
Students wishing further information on the CAFM ACAF
Partnership or to participate in the test pilot should visit the
Education tab on the AFOA Canada website (www.afoa.ca)
or email pdebassige@afoa.ca. CO
