CAREER OPTIONS CARRIÈRES - Post Secondary, Pour les étudiants cégeps, collège et universités Spring 2018 - 18
"Dear Parents: Here's What We Want You to Know About Careers Today" By Edna Batengas, Katerina Cookson, Sarah Kwan and Jessica Wall W hen we enter university, our parents begin to tell us what they think, what they know, and what they want to see from us in terms of career. Choosing "my" career sometimes feels more like choosing "our" career. We all have strategies for handling this pressure. Some of us buy time by coming up with a satisfactory answer for the "What are you going to do with your degree?" question; others simply choose the (career) path of least resistance by following our family expectations. No matter how we choose to field this pressure, we know deep down that our parents want the best for us. They have wisdom we don't, and they can see from a vantage point that we haven't reached yet. But speak to students across all disciplines, and one thing becomes clear: getting a career isn't how it used to be. Getting a stable one that pays enough to live comfortably? Hard. Getting a stable one that you love? Even harder. Sometimes, we wish our parents would realize how much the idea of the "traditional" career path has evolved. Below, three students talk about how they've been unravelling their own career paths, and what they want their parents to know about careers today. Above everything, we're grateful that our parents care, and for all they've done up this point to pave the road for us. Some of us will ultimately choose to follow those roads, and some of us won't - but we'll all end up where we need to be. So, parents, give us room to try, struggle, and even fail. At some point along the way, we'll need your help and advice. But maybe this time we can learn from each other. ©ISTOCK.COM/PRINCIGALLI continued on page 20 18 SPRING | PRINTEMPS 2018 CAREER OPTIONS CARRIÈRES POST-SECONDARY EDITION | POUR LES ÉTUDIANTS DES CÉGEPS, COLLÈGE ET UNIVERSITÉS
