There is clearly a bottom line impact on both clinical outcomes as well as financial significance. Research completed at the Mayo Clinic indicated that 50 percent of patients do not take medications as prescribed. Identification of non-adherence is challenging. This article also stated that non-adherence is responsible for 11 percent of hospital readmissions.2 The significant financial burden of medication non-adherence cannot be overlooked.
