President's Letter The Time of the Case Manager Is Here! BY NANCY SKINNER, RN-BC, CCM T here is no better way to begin my final President's editorial than with a quote from the Bible (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8), or, if you prefer, a song written by Pete Seeger and made popular by The Byrds in 1965. That song is entitled "Turn! Turn! Turn! - To Everything There Is a Season." The words from that Bible passage as modified by the song include the following: To everything there is a season And a time to every purpose, under Heaven A time to be born, a time to die A time to plant, a time to reap A time to kill, a time to heal A time to laugh, a time to weep A time to build up, a time to break down A time to dance, a time to mourn A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together A time of love, a time of hate A time of war, a time of peace A time you may embrace, a time to refrain from embracing A time to gain, a time to lose A time to rend, a time to sew A time for love, a time for hate A time for peace, I swear it's not too late Those words came to mind as I was preparing to write this, my final article, as the 2012-2014 President of CMSA. I have personally experienced many of the emotions detailed within that verse over the past two years. But my personal concerns and feelings are not the focus of this article. My colleagues, case managers, care coordinators and care managers from all over the globe are at the heart of the words I bring you in this issue. It is my greatest joy to share these words with you and hope they represent the absolute love and respect I have for each person who endeavors to provide a professional case/ care management practice. Case management was born from a mandate to coordinate care in a costefficient manner. In the early years, we planted many seeds and watched them grow. The seeds of advocacy and coordination of care through each transition of care grew the strongest and produced the sweetest fruit. We encouraged and supported our patients as we partnered with them to develop continuing care Issue 4 * 2014 CMSA TODAY 7
