Corporate collaboration is an effective strategy for organizations that are interdependent or serve a population that seeks health care from both communities. Corporate collaboration creates synergy that drives a return on investment in real benefits, efficient processes, and effective adherence to health care standards. These synergistic attributes ultimately provide positive patient experiences with rapid access to care and attainment of full human performance. Corporate collaboration is definitely a win-win strategy for patients and stakeholders! â–  MELANIE A. PRINCE, RN, MSN, CNE, RN-BC, CCM, Colonel, USAF, NC, is currently a scholar at the Air War College, Air University in Montgomery, Alabama, studying strategic leadership, air power, national security and decision making, international relations, and United States policy development. Her 20-year career as a medical -surgical nurse includes diverse clinical experiences in emergency nursing, inpatient and ambulatory care, pediatrics, wounded warrior care, TRICARE, and population health. rEfErEnCE * CMSA nuances of the perspective organizations' business models. Conversely, the MTF executive staff invited civilian specialists as keynote speakers for monthly lunch & learn sessions. To date, specialists from mental health and cardiology have provided training to the MTF staff that will ultimately enhance patient referrals and care management. Additional collaborative events included dual administrative training sessions hosted by the TRICARE network contractor and facility tours of new civilian health care services. However, the most impactful and influential collaborations are occurring on a monthly basis with initiatives that engage network provider outreach, ensure patient-centered positive care experiences, and streamline "lifecycle of a referral," thus driving real outcomes. For example, the senior medical physician engages in monthly "community network rounds" where he and a team comprised of an administrative executive, senior nursing executive, and TRICARE benefit advisor, visit various civilian provider offices to make introductions, educate on processes, and identify "challenge areas" between the MTF and their organization. To date three deliberate collaboration efforts have been synergized, as a direct result of "community network rounds." The first effort is entitled Building Bridges through Problem Solving. New actions include a process for continuous updates of important personnel contact information and linking civilian pre-admission staff directly to TRICARE insurance advisors for benefit clarification as well as faster telephone authorizations for urgent referrals. This effort also supports a mechanism for military health care staff to ensure specific steps and timely procedures are implemented to support readiness missions for active duty patients. The second effort is entitled Humanizing (vs. names on paper) Professional Relationships. New actions include establishment of "phonea-friend" lines for virtual consultations, on-demand clinical problemsolving for difficult patient care scenarios in case management, and communicating critical information for chronic care management, such as Hemoglobin levels for MTF diabetic patients who are treated primarily with a civilian health care specialist. The third effort is multi-factorial and, in accordance with its name, strives to Enhance Corporate Standards. Military and civilian standards require processes and outcomes to ensure effective transitions of care; patient safety; patient-centered care; and patient satisfaction with positive health care experiences. In summary, corporate collaboration between and among the leadership teams from military and civilian health care organizations have resulted in soft and hard outcomes such as: * De-mystifying military medicine; * Providing new awareness on MTF capabilities; * Identifying challenge areas for process improvement; * Enhancing professional relationships and communication among provider staff; * Strategic planning by executive leadership teams; and * Creating synergistic environments that support patient care and corporate business rules. Patients are comforted in the knowledge that military and civilian health care networks are connected in real ways with the goal of ensuring their health care is seamless and positive as they move from one system to the other. To build on this new-found synergy, future collaborative initiatives will include: integrating mechanisms to quantify and measure processes and outcomes; combining/ integrating professional staff symposiums and training; conducting a Travis, T.
