business analytical data to improve quality of
patient care and outcomes. These tasks are
no longer relegated to a single department
within a healthcare setting, but rather have
become the domain of healthcare professionals serving in many departments, including case management.
So, how do today's forward-thinking
case managers wrap their arms around all
of these very dynamic forces and position
themselves for fulfilling, successful professional careers?
CASE MANAGERS:
YOUR TIME HAS COME
For case managers, there has never been
a more dynamic time to shine. For those
who are certified, which the Commission for
Case Manager Certification (CCMC) reports
now exceeds 42,000, the future is especially
bright. CCMC's latest data reports that 45
percent of board-certified case managers
earn more than $80,000 annually, up 33
percent from 2013. Further, the percentage of employers requiring certification
has increased from 25.9 percent in 2004
to 40.2 percent in 2015, according to the
CCMC. The CMSA State of the Industry
2015 survey found that over 40 percent
of employers now fund part of their case
managers' certification application and/or
exam preparation costs, and an estimated
35 percent also compensate their staff for
the costs of CEs and renewal fees. This is
good news, and case managers should avail
themselves of all employer-supported certification and education.
There are other steps, too, which can
position case managers for success and in
their effective management of the aforementioned changes affecting healthcare.
Following are guidelines for case managers to follow in adapting to today's
healthcare landscape:
1. Recognize your heightened role as a catalyst for change and embrace new ways
to be a patient problem solver, educator
and patient empowerment advocate.
2. Stay true to your professional mission.
Certified Case Managers should follow the CCMC's Code of Professional

Conduct; its principles and rules of conduct. Additionally, all case managers
should adhere to the Case Management
Society of America's Standard of Practice
for Case Management; its guiding principles and recommended processes.
Become a strong practitioner in terms
of your clinical education and preparation across diverse areas, including
medical-surgical treatments, intensive
care, critical care, home care, psychology, obstetrics, pediatrics and neurological care.
Be sensitive to different ethnicities and
the cultural values they bring into their
healthcare. Take steps to assure that all
patients who communicate in different
languages fully understand their medical condition and treatment plans. Be
empathetic to their family's concerns
and needs, as well. Review patient
teaching materials to ensure that they
reflect the current population groups
that you are serving.
Be open to new ways of providing
healthcare such as those requested
by the millennial generation. Learn
and become proficient in current
methods of communicating with
patients such as via mobile devices
and text messages.
Be willing to expand your role to serve
contemporary healthcare mandates
such as those relating to quality patient
care. Adopt practices that support the
use of EHRs and your role in population
health management initiatives wherein
data is collected and aggregated in
order to better stratify, monitor and
address the needs of patients in certain
high-risk categories.
Stay abreast of changing healthcare
regulations and how they may impact
the delivery of care in your practice
setting and for your patients, whether
older patients, patients with complex
conditions, pediatric patients, veterans
or various underserved populations.
Embrace your role as a catalyst for
positive change and inform other
healthcare administrators, physicians

"With our graying population comes an increase in incidences of
diseases of the aged and greater demand on resources such as nursing
homes and professionals such as case managers to care for them."

and other professionals of your vital
role. "Telling the story of case management" assists in personalizing the
issues we face and the problems our
relationship model of care resolves for
our patients and their families.
9. Advocate for your true role as a case
manager. Recognize that, while utilization review has a role to play in the
efficient use of resources, and appropriate reimbursement for services
provided, it is case management that
truly achieves improved outcomes, the
engagement of patients as partners
in their care, avoidance of readmissions and improved transitions of care.
Additionally, case management is critical to improved patient satisfaction
rates, which have become increasingly
more important.
10. Invest in your professional growth.
While it's good news that more
employers are helping their case managers defray the costs of certification
preparation and maintenance of continuing education credentials, case
managers should regularly seek out
educational training and resources
that will enhance their knowledge
and skills.
While disruptive and often uncomfortable, change can bring great rewards. With
an open mind and willingness to evolve
with the changing healthcare landscape,
case managers can become one of the most
powerful instruments of positive change for
patient care in America. ■
