Certified Case Manager® Realizing the Broad-Reaching Benefits of Board Certification BY JoLYNNE "Jo" CARTER, BSN, RN, CCM H ealth and human services professionals who pursue board certification as Certified Case Managers® (CCMs) reap many benefits, not only in terms of their own career advancement, but more importantly, as they contribute to improved outcomes for individuals in support of the "triple aims" in health care. The CCM credential is nationally accredited and adheres to the strict standards of a research-based examination. The certification is supported by a comprehensive role and functions study that is conducted every five years to identify current practices in the field, as well as the required knowledge and skills associated with evidence-based practice. Given the rigor of the eligibility criteria, it's no wonder that the CCM credential is increasingly recognized and even required by more employers. Field research by the Commission for Case Manager Certification (CCMC) has found that the percentage of employers that require board certification is growing (CCMC, 2010). In addition, more employers offer additional compensation for board certification, nearly one-third in 2009 versus 20 percent in 2004. The CCM demonstrates that a professional has mastery of clearly defined knowledge and practice domains within case management, providing a common ground of competency across the field regardless of the professional background or expertise of the case manager. While many case managers continue to come from the nursing field, professional diversity is growing. They also include social workers, rehabilitation counselors, occupational therapists, physical therapists, mental health counselors, and more recently, pharmacists. Beyond the benefits realized by the professional case manager, the CCM credential is first and foremost for consumer protection. In many aspects of their lives, consumers are savvy about choosing the right professionals for their needs, whether a board-certified physician or a certified public accountant. The CCM credential provides assurance to individuals (also known as "clients" who receive case management services) that they are working with a highly competent case management professional. Board certified case managers also support the pursuit of the "triple aims" of improvements in care, health, and costs. One important way they accomplish these aims is by fulfilling the vital care coordination role. In a complex and fragmented health care system in which patients are treated by a variety of physicians and other clinicians, board certified case managers have the knowledge, expertise, and communication skills to act as the hub of a professionally diverse transdisciplinary team. These teams are transdisciplinary in nature in that they are not defined by their specialty or discipline, but in their practice of person-centered care. Today in health care, there is greater emphasis on measures and outcomes toward achieving the triple aims. It is not enough for case managers to know anecdotally that care coordination as part of the overall case management process is valuable to clients.
