Immediate Past President's Letter Risks, Challenges and Progress BY KATHLEEN FRASER, RN-BC, MSN, MHA, CCM, CRRN I feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to help support and grow our incredible organization. Our work to empower case managers to become leaders is deeply meaningful to me. Navigating a rapidly transforming industry through healthcare trends and challenges is both energizing and exhausting for case management professionals, and we have started to be recognized, moving us from having to battle for our respected place to having it officially written into various models of care. CMSA, just as case management itself, transcends every level of care in the full continuum. Our discipline is very large, yet in many ways continues to be very small. Through the years of my work with CMSA, I have given a lot of advice, and now I am taking some of my own. I have often told case managers that they have to step into risk and challenge to really achieve growth and find their full potential. This is my goal with this next chapter in my life and passion for case management. I am grateful to be able to continue to serve CMSA in new ways in the coming years. Thank you to everyone who has helped and supported me along the way, and I am blessed to say there have been many. My journey with CMSA began in 1993. My experience taught me that I had much to learn if I wanted to be a leader in case management one day, but it also inspired me to run for a local CMSA chapter board of director position. I have since served the Houston/Gulf Coast Chapter in the president role for 4½ terms overall, plus every committee position imaginable. Most importantly, I'm happy to say that over twenty years later, those involved with our chapter from the beginning are still my friends today. The impact on me was immense and inspired me, to say the least, to find ways to give back to the case management profession. This desire to give back led me to run for the National Board of Directors. After serving four years in two roles, ultimately I returned to the BOD as national CMSA president-elect, becoming president for the last two years. Serving the CMSA community has been an honor and privilege, and none of the things we accomplished could have been possible without the work of the entire national board. Please be sure to recognize and thank these tireless board members with whom I had the pleasure of working with these last three years. As I reflect on the past two years, here are some of the things we accomplished that I am most proud of: 1) O ur chapters were independent communities scattered throughout the U.S. Now, I'm happy to say that we have a truly national organization with chapters sharing best practices and by-laws. 2) We began a Mentoring program between chapters for support, whether it be ideas or financial. 3) Turning around our declining membership by adding nearly two thousand members, and still climbing. 4) Supporting and introducing our revised Core Curriculum at our 2016 Long Beach National Conference; I was honored to write the forward.
