eople are usually quite
decisive about whether they
feel technology increases
or decreases the time they
spend on their work-related
tasks. In May 2017, I read about two
distinct examples that demonstrated
how technology had a direct effect on
the throughput times in the emergency
department (ED). While one of these
is not something that happens often

(thank goodness), the other is something
that will probably start to become a
normal process.

Having worked in and managed an emergency department (ED) for years, the last
thing I worried about was the loss of our
computer systems. I was more worried about

a disaster occurring that would overload us
with critical patients or being short-staffed
and trying to keep up with the workload.
Computers were just a normal part of the
process to care for patients. But that certainly
changed recently in the United Kingdom.
On Friday afternoon, May 12, the computer
systems throughout the English and Scottish
National Health System (NHS) began to mysteriously close down one after another.
They were also showing a strange
