CMSA Today - Issue 1, 2018 - 27

O

ver the past couple of years,
CMSA has transitioned
from using the title "case
manager" to "professional
case manager." In the
current climate of healthcare and even
the non-medical industry, we find the
title of case manager emerging in various
forms. We have terms like navigators,
care coordinators, care managers, case
managers, transitions of care, discharge
planners - the list can go on and on. I
receive questions from physicians, medical
professionals, nurses and even case
managers who are unclear of the role of a
professional case manager.
Recently a Facebook tag appeared in my
e-mail from a colleague and friend. She was
sharing her recent experience on the phone
regarding an appliance repair request. To
her surprise, she was informed that a case
manager has been assigned to her service
ticket. That started a lively discussion from
others who shared where they have experienced case management services in many
non-medical settings.
In looking at our reflection in the mirror,
the professional case manager brings unique
talents and skills to the healthcare system.
It is imperative that we as a profession take
the opportunity to educate and demonstrate
what the professional case manager is about.
When a colleague or other healthcare professional is unsure of what a professional
case manager's role is, find your elevator
speech of 30 seconds or less of what we
do. Go to cmsa.org and watch the video
on who we are. This is a great example of
the elevator speech.
Remember: Our role is not the tasks we
check off our lists, although important case
management is so much more than the task
at hand. Professional case management is the
critical thinking skills, the connecting the dots
and closing the gaps in care; it is teaching a
colleague or client to fish instead of giving
them the fish. Which will survive longer: the
one who knows how to fish or the one who
gets the fish? Professional case management
is engaging and empowering not only the
client, but also the interdisciplinary team. It is
building the trusting relationships, utilization
of evidence-based practice, ensuring quality,
safe care and being good stewards of the
healthcare dollar. We are so much more than

the task at hand, which becomes our next
steps in our professional journey.
Looking at the professional case manager's reflection in a glass ball, what will
our future hold? The future is bright for the
professional case manager. Our innovation
and creative critical thinking skills will identify
areas where case management services will
flourish. As the baby boomer generation
ages, the professional case manager will be
there; when the healthcare system continues
its evolutionary change, the professional
case manager will be there. It will be through
our solid standards of practice, professional
specialty certification and processes that
set us apart from others using the title case
manager.
When looking in the mirror at the reflection of the professional case manager, what
is it you see? I see a group of individuals with
a vast array of experience and diversity who
bring their expertise in case/care management to make a difference for the clients
they serve. A professional who engages and
empowers his or her clients in health behaviors to increase wellness. A professional who
advocates, collaborates, facilitates, coordinates, educates and communicates. The
reflection portrays a professional who builds
meaningful relationships with his or her clients, colleagues, interdisciplinary team members, providers, communities and beyond.
Peering into the looking glass, the professional case manager is being called to a
more active role in public policy. The CMSA
2017-2018 Public Policy Committee met earlier this fall to set forth our agenda. The
question and challenge becomes engaging and empowering our membership to
actively seek out ways to lend their expertise
to organizational leaders, community, state
and federal policy makers.
The CMSA Model Act that was revised in
2017, as well as the return of the Hill Day in
September, kicked off the year. Our focus
is to get the Model Act in the hands of

legislators and organizational and community leaders. Each of us plays an important
role in making this happen. When people
have questions or need more information on
what a professional case manager does, give
them a copy of the Model Act or share the
Standards of Practice with them.
Does your chapter have a public policy
liaison? If not, think about recruiting one.
How about a local public policy committee?
Find a member who has a passion for this
and have him or her assist the local board
in starting a committee.
Your National Public Policy Committee
members are eager to assist you. Check
the website to find out which member is
assigned to your state. Connect with that
committee member; he or she is willing and
able to assist you.
Updates from our committee related to
legislative agendas involving case/care management roles and functions are triggered
in different bills; communication is shared
through monthly and as-needed e-mails.
Public Policy Liaison/all member calls will
continue throughout the year. Our partnership with the National Counsel of the
State Board of Nursing continues as it relates
to the Nurse Licensure Compact activities,
supporting activities related to case management title protection, support for the
National Nurse Act and much more.
This is the year for the professional case
manager's voice to be heard. It will be heard
only if each of us shares our expertise and
builds relationships with our representatives.
Remember, we are here to educate and advocate, and this is done in a bipartisan manner.
President John F. Kennedy said during
his inaugural address: "Ask not what your
country can do for you; but what you can
do for your country." Let this be our challenge for the professional case manager to
advocate for our profession and the clients/
healthcare consumers we serve. Let our collective voice be heard through our professional standards of practice, model act and
relationship building with our organizational
and public leaders. ■

case manager of Innovative Care Consultants, LLC.
