Examine your scores and find your
strengths and weaknesses by exploring
each color code below.

Red: NFPA 99
If you scored well in this area, you likely
know the ins and outs of NFPA 99: Health
Care Facilities Code. This important code
provides minimum health care facility
requirements covering a broad spectrum
of applications. If your score could use
improvement, you may not have much
experience with code compliance in
this area, or you may need to brush up
on the latest editions of the code. The
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services
now requires compliance with the 2012
edition, so it's especially important to
understand those requirements. To beef

If you did well in this area, you likely
know how to manage the electrical
distribution system in a health care facility,
including the essential electrical system
that must be compliant with the 2012
editions of NFPA 101, NFPA 99, and their
referenced codes as required by CMS.
If your score was low in this area, you
may need to learn more about hospital
electrical systems. ASHE has several
resources available to help. ASHE's Electrical
Systems Handbook for Health Care Facilities
is available at www.ashestore.com.
ASHE also offers an online course on
this topic. The Electrical Systems for
Health Care Facilities e-learning program
includes a copy of the Electrical Systems
Handbook and covers important topics,
including management of electrical
distribution systems; hazard vulnerability
analysis; and planning and scheduling
system shutdowns for maintenance or
construction. More information about the
online course is available at www.ashe.org/
education/electricalsystems/.

Yellow: Life safety
If you performed well in this area, you
may be responsible for managing your
facility's life safety program and you
likely understand how to implement
requirements of NFPA 101: Life Safety Code
and other requirements. If your score
could use a boost, you may not have
much experience with code compliance
or you may need more information
about the 2012 edition NFPA 101, which
is now required by CMS. ASHE has several
resources available to help, including the
Managing Life Safety education program.
The program will be held November 8 to
9 in Chicago, and is also available as an

online course. For ASHE affiliated chapters
or health care organizations that want to
bring life safety training to larger groups,
the program is available as an ASHE hosted
program. Learn more at www.ashe.org/
education/mls/.

Green: Finance
If you scored well in this area, you are
likely comfortable using finance and
budgeting calculations as you manage
your facility and communicate with health
care leaders. If your score was low in this
area-a common area for knowledge
gaps among facility professionals-you
may need to learn more about financial
concepts. Understanding the language
of business can help you work more
strategically with hospital management.
ASHE's online education course, Finance
and Budgeting for Facility Managers,
can help you strengthen your business
acumen. The online program includes an
electronic copy of The Facility Manager's
Guide to Finance and Budgeting. More
information is available at www.ashe.org/
education/finance-and-budgeting/.

Purple: Health care construction
If you did well in this area, you likely
understand the critical topics related
to health care planning, design, and
construction. If you want to improve
your score in this area, consider learning
more about the planning, design, and
construction process; construction risk
assessments; and compliance issues.
ASHE's Health Care Construction (HCC)
Certificate Workshop is a popular
program that provides information on
these topics. The program will be held:
* September 25-26, 2017, Salt Lake
City, Utah
* October 10-11, 2017, Grand Rapids,
Michigan
* November 1-2, 2017, Renton,
Washington (program hosted
by WSSHE)
* November 6-7, 2017, Chicago, Illinois
* January 23-24, 2018, Mannheim,
