optimization

A

SHE has recognized University of Florida
Health for cutting energy consumption
costs by more than $5 million over
the last five years. During this time,
UF Health also lowered its overall
operational costs, reduced building
systems alarms across the campus by 80 percent,
improved the resiliency of its system infrastructure,
and, above all, improved the environment of care.
UF Health's Cancer Research Hospital boasts patient
satisfaction survey results in the high 90 percent range
consistently year over year, citing overall satisfaction
with room conditions and temperature. At the heart
of this success story are the people who facilitate UF
Health's ability to harness the power of data.

Challenges
UF Health is facing an increasing number of
challenges, high among them being how to achieve
high patient satisfaction scores, how to do more with
less in terms of facility operations, and how to tackle
the growing gap in the facility maintenance personnel
skill set brought on by staff retirements. UF Health
approached these challenges holistically with both
technological solutions as well as human solutions.
In 2008, UF Health implemented an enterprise-based
building management system built on an open
52 INSIDE ASHE | FALL 2017

communications platform. Building and business
systems including HVAC, plumbing, medical gas,
power metering, and work order management all
converge under this platform. All data generated by
these systems have been uniquely named through data
naming standards. Today, UF Health trends and stores
150,000 such data points every 15 minutes in a robust
data historian. Eight years' worth of this data is now
available for data analytics.

How is data used at UF Health?
Key performance indicators
UF Health has established key performance
indicators (KPIs) that are critical to its facility
operations success. KPIs convert data into information.
UF Health primarily tracks patient comfort and
energy usage. They have developed a patient room
comfort index that tracks temperature deviation from
set points in patient rooms across the campus. This
allows facility management staff to track and measure
comfort conditions historically and on a real-time
basis, allowing them to respond proactively to patient
room comfort condition issues.
