or years, health care facility professionals have been asked to do more with
less; now they are being asked to add value back to their organizations.
We are constantly working to ensure our facilities are running efficiently
and effectively. That work may involve adjusting building automation systems,
completing energy saving projects, using data to drive efficiency, or any number
of additional approaches.
This edition of Inside ASHE is focused on ways hospitals and health care
facilities can increase their efficiency. In reading this publication, I hope you will
find new ideas for your facility so that you can contribute to your organization's
mission and its budget. Aside from this publication, ASHE has a wealth of
resources to help your facility become more efficient.

Energy to Care
Energy to Care is ASHE's free energy benchmarking and awards program.
The program allows you to visualize energy data and can help you measure
the efficiency improvements in your hospital. Tracking energy use is critical,
because showing improvements in this area can show senior leaders the
benefits of your work and encourage greater support for future projects. Visit
www.energytocare.org to get started.

Sustainability Roadmap
The Sustainability Roadmap for Hospitals includes step-by-step instructions
on energy and water projects proven to work in health care settings. Each
performance improvement measure (PIM) also includes talking points for
showing the value of the project to senior management, and many link to
case studies showing how the project has worked in other facilities. Visit
www.sustainabilityroadmap.org to find a project that will work for you.

Solutions for your challenges
ASHE holds two large conferences each year: the International Summit &
Exhibition on Health Facility Planning, Design & Construction (PDC Summit) and
the ASHE Annual Conference & Technical Exhibition. Both of these conferences
include a huge exhibition. You can walk the tradeshow floor to find solutions
to the efficiency challenges you face. For example, the ASHE member who
wrote the article on LED lighting (page 28) struggled to find a project that met
his needs until he met with a solution provider at an ASHE conference. ASHE
also offers ASHE Pages, an online buyers guide that can connect you with
potential solutions.
Whether you are in a large health system or a small critical access hospital,
I encourage you to tap into ASHE's resources to find your next bright idea for
increasing efficiency.
