“A building must be inexorably linked to the cultural and natural
environment beyond its physical footprint. This project intentionally
blurs traditional lines and creates a design conversation with the site’s
ambient elements.” Rene Gonzalez, AIA
A parking garage may seem an unlikely site for a highend boutique. It is, however, the second retail store RGA has
designed for Alchemist in Herzog and DeMeuron’s iconic
parking structure. The new 2,500-square-foot Alchemist store,
originally located on the building’s fifth floor, was moved to the
first floor and designed as an insulted box facing Lincoln Road.
The design allows patrons to disconnect from the constant
motion, sound and heat of the garage by using materials
that create a calming language of color, surface and light.
Melamine foam envelops the ceilings and walls of the new
cocoon-like space, acting as a buffer for the surrounding
structure and adding a soft tactile quality. A rhythmic pattern
of saw tooth walls is accentuated by hidden LED light bands
that produce changing color compositions, appearing and
disappearing behind the foam surface. At the rear of the
