Florida/Caribbean Architect - Fall 2013 - (Page 22) HONOR A W A R D S GOLD MEDAL Kenneth Treister, FAIA The architect in his studio. The Gold Medal is the highest honor awarded by AIA Florida to one of its members. It recognizes an architect whose distinguished career has had a profound impact on the profession for an extended period of time. For over 50 years, Ken Treister has distinguished himself in multiple areas. First and foremost, he is an awardwinning architect whose design work and philosophy represent what the jury described as "a happy collision of Gaudi, Wright and even, Soleri." His passion for beautiful buildings and his dedication to the art forms that contribute to the overall aesthetics of architecture has had an extraordinary impact on Florida's design history. Ken Treister's career has produced a body of work that demands he be labeled an artist. His mastery of architecture, sculpture, painting, photography and writing makes him a true Renaissance man. Through the years, he has practiced architecture and served as an adjunct professor at the University of Miami and the University of Florida. He has distinguished himself as a member of the University of Miami Society of University Founders, as a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, as an Academic Correspondent to Real Academia de Belles Arts de Saint Jorge in Barcelona, Spain and as a member of the Society of Architectural Historians. Ken Treister's commitment to the profession has been expressed through his building designs, his prolific writing and countless lectures, through community activism and through the marriage of sculpture and art in an architectural context. Among his many published works are Maya Architecture: Temples in the Sky and Bok Tower Gardens, America's Taj Mahal. The 2013 jury judged Ken Treister a perfect example of everything that the Gold Medal represents - a passion for architecture and dedication to the profession. 22 Above and below: The Sophie and Nathan Gumenick Chapel, Temple Israel of Greater Miami, 1969.
