Florida/Caribbean Architect - Fall 2015 - (Page 30)

Honor A W A R D s gOLD MEDAL Steve Jernigan, FAIA Pensacola, Florida The highest honor awarded by AIA Florida to one of its members, the Gold Medal recognizes a Florida architect whose distinguished career has had a profound impact on the profession for an extended period of time. Leading by example through political advocacy at the local, state and national levels, Jernigan's leadership influences component strategies across the country. Throughout his career, he has preserved Florida's privatized prosecution of unlicensed activity, established coalitions to handle A/E overlap issues for building officials, stood as a barrier against an onslaught of challenges to the state's Qualifications-Based Selection process and averted attempts to reduce Florida's educational requirements for licensure. His talent for thinking outside-the-box reenergized the Florida Architect's Political Action Committee (FAPAC). Serving as Chair of the National ArchiPAC in 2013-2014, the campaign was able to raise more than $300,000 to support architecture-friendly candidates in the last election cycle. He has served on innumerable local, state and national committees and currently serves as the AIA appointee to the NAAB Visiting Teams for the 2015-2018 term. As the 2015 jury stated, "Steve's tireless dedication to the AIA, the profession and the community make him an exceptional candidate for the AIA Florida Gold Medal. He continues to be in touch with members at every level of the organization, while actively contributing to and protecting the practice of architecture."
