Looking for a
Sales of Energy
to Stack Up

f it seems that the world is moving at
a faster pace, maybe it's that we're all
hyped up on caffeine. And it's no longer
just the coffee. The energy drink market
continues to grow rapidly-up 60 percent
between 2008 and 2011, according to
Reportlinker's "Energy Drinks and Shots:
U.S. Market Trends."
The publication, released last year,
pegged the total market for energy drinks
and shots at $12.5 billion in 2012. Energy
drinks, bars, gels and other methods of
delivering a boost show no signs of
"We've been doubling
the space (devoted to energy
products) every year," said Michael Gazzalla,
vice president of operations for TimeSaver,
which has 13 Town Star stores in South Florida.
"Now, we have a full door of 10 shelves. Every
year you see sales increasing, whether that is
because we're putting more of it out or because
of demands by the customer."
And that customer base has expanded,
Gazzalla said. "It's not age restricted any
more. It used to be
just younger people. Now you see

people who are doing activities in the afternoon-dancers or walkers-who grab a can
before they go. It's the norm to have it now.
In some areas, we sell more energy drinks
than we do Pepsi and Coke."
The market is dominated by a handful of
big players-namely Red Bull and Monster
Energy-but it's one in which plenty of competitors are hoping to see a boost.
Move Over, Coffee
If energy products continue to expand
beyond coffee, it's for good reason: They sell.
"I believe they are outpacing coffee right now,
with the amount of dollar rings," said Dennis
Smart, president of Smart Stop Food Stores.
