Steps to Designing a Functional,
Fun Layout for Your C-store

t’s not your grandfather’s convenience
store industry anymore. Every aspect of
the industry is changing. Channel blurring
is the buzzword du jour. You can still find beef
jerky and nachos in a store. In another store,
you could easily find lobster bisque prepared
by the store’s classically trained chef and a
fine Bavarian wine to enjoy with it.
Whatever diverse products and services
are available, each store has one thing in
common, the building. The design of that
structure is an integral part of the success.
It’s a critical issue.

Services, considers profitability, speed
and safety when planning store design.
“Profitability is dictating design. How will you
make more money? You have to get people
in and out. If customers see a full parking
lot, they may change their patterns and find
a store that is less crowded.”
Function is the first issue. A lot of people
begin the thought process outside first, but
Fair sees it differently. “Go from the inside
out. You don’t just build a certain size c-store.
What do you want the building to do? Design
it for function first and then pretty it up after
that. If it functions well, it will be pretty on its
own,” he said. The building has to work with
the lot, but curb appeal is simple once the
interior is planned.
Safety has to be integrated into the design.
“A sales counter in the middle of the store is
a bad idea. You can’t watch your back from
two sides. A good design has the sales counter back up to a wall, close to an entrance,
so when customers come in they can be
greeted,” he said, adding that employees
should not have to make a 90-degree turn
