Pest Perspectives - September/October 2014 - (Page 6)
ife is now returned to normal after a great week at
"FPMA in Paradise," the 2014 Summer Conference. We had
a great time at the Sawgrass Marriott - a sold out exhibit
hall, fun leadership challenges, education sessions a special
night at the historic TPC Clubhouse, and lots of fellowship,
making and renewing friendships. Thursday's closing event, the
Sunset Soiree, was especially memorable. I had the privilege of
recognizing members that have contributed to the association
over many years.
Tom Walkup was awarded the Pioneer Award for his selfless
decades of hard work. Tom is a past president of FPMA and is
always seen cooking at the Sapp Walkup Cookout, which is now
part of the Southeast Pest Management Conference on the University of Florida
Gainesville campus. His steady leadership has helped shape the future of FPMA.
Harry J. Balcom Legend Award winner Todd Himelberger is well known to
the association and the Pest Management profession. Todd has helped create
an important partnership with FPMA - Syngenta Professional Products is the
Presenting Sponsor for Expo and Summer Conference, making the outstanding
experience at these signature events possible.
I presented Rick Grimes, a past president of FPMA, with the Fellowship
Award. Rick has always been very supportive of me throughout the years as
I have volunteered in various aspects of our association. I consider Rick not only
as my employer, but as a true friend.
Tim Brock and I were honored to recognize the memory of Past President
and Florida Pest Management Foundation founder Jerry Williams, with his
wife Barbara and son Michael. We lost Jerry a few years ago, but his Memorial
Scholarship Fund lives on. The fund has already donated five scholarships to
The University of Florida's entomology students.
I encourage everyone to read more coverage of the 2014 Summer Conference
in this issue of Pest Perspectives, and to see photos on the FPMA Facebook page
(www.facebook.com/floridapestmanagementassociation). I also encourage you
to plan for the 2015 FPMA in Paradise at the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo,
At press time FPMA members are registering for the September series of
OSHA compliance workshops. In four locations statewide, former state safety
compliance field official-turned-consultant, Sheldon Primus, will instruct
attendees on all aspects of OSHA regulations relevant to pest management
operations. Attendees will earn four hours of Core CEU credit, a certificate of
competency, and a free personal consultation after the workshops. It's a great
service provided to members on a very important topic!
Plan now to attend the 2015 Pest and Lawn Care Expo, January 19-23 at the
Embassy Suites in Kissimmee. Expo 2015 will also feature the Marathon Data
Pestpac User Conference - a combination of meetings that will expose FPMA
