While Fitbits have taken off as a fitness device, there are business applications. Rogoway has seen companies implementing a health and wellness incentive to its Fitbit wearers. "There's a lot of competition around that," he said. "Campaigns on who can walk the most or get the most out of it. It's being incorporated with other wellness apps. It's not just walking, but how you are eating and calorie counts." Two other new products will soon be competing for wrist space. Myo has released the Gesture Control Armband, which allows the wearer to use hand motions to communicate with other technologies. For instance, it may mean controlling the TV channel or a presentation-or using arm movements to control a drone. And, the Rufus wrist communicator combines a smartphone with smartwatch. The communicator allows for voice and video calls, music and surfing the web. largely avoided the missteps that felled Google Glass, and are focused solely on creating augmented or virtual realities. Augmented reality (AR) adds to something that is real, such as allowing a user to look at his living room and insert a couch to see where it works best. Virtual reality (VR) creates an entirely new experience. In 2016, a significant number of new AR/VR devices were expected to ship, including Oculus Rift from Facebook, HTC Vive from smartphone maker HTC; PlayStation VR, which integrates with Sony's PlayStation4; Samsung Gear VR, which integrates with Samsung's smartphones; and Google Cardboard- which costs as little as $5 and integrates with iPhones and Androids. While the initial market is gamers, there are business applications, largely in training. "Some companies already are using this," Rogoway said. "You can create 3D training events, so if you're having a bee problem, you can get into it and see how it's taken care of." Virtual Reality: A Concept Coming While Google Glass may have been an experiment that was before its time-Google shuttered the project in 2015-it did not die before launching a series of successors. They have Key Takeaways ■ Handheld devices still are the go-to form of technology-but perhaps not for much longer. Wearable technology is coming into its own. ■ Smartwatches: The smartphone may have replaced the wristwatch, but computing technology is moving onto the arm in space previously supporting just a time and date. ■ Augmented reality/virtual reality: Augmented reality (AR) adds to something that is real, and virtual reality (VR) creates an entirely new experience. In 2016, a significant number of new AR/VR devices are expected to ship. ■ Other wearable devices include: Walking Assist, which would help workers bend and lift without hurting the back, embedded chips to assess health, and drones.
