Get Ready for Expo 2014!
s my term of office as the 66th President of FPMA draws to
a close, the level of activity has not diminished - I expect to
"finish strong" and am glad to report on several recent items:
The Bilingual CEU-Business Conference took place Sept. 11 at
the Ft. Lauderdale REC, with strong attendance by attendees and
exhibitors. The meeting featured 10 hours of all categories of CEUs in
concurrent English-Spanish sessions and a business dinner speaker
presenting in both languages. Many thanks to meal sponsors Univar
and Bayer and to Dr. Claude Thomas for preparing and serving a
BBQ lunch and low country boil dinner.
The OSHA Fall Protection Standards met recently at the FPMA office and by
conference call. The Working Group had draft standards that were discussed at NPMA
Pestworld, which were also discussed at the NPMA Government Affairs Committee
agenda. Fall protection and ladder safety standards for routine GHP, rodent, bird and
WDO inspections and treatment affects every company; OSHA has cited companies for
lack of fall protection for height exposures over four feet. FPMA is a leading partner in
seeking solutions for all members. Stay tuned for additional details and updates!
Leadership FPMA has launched its inaugural class of five highly qualified individuals:
Walton Pest Control
The first session took place Sept. 24-25 in Gainesville for a look into the importance
of research to pest management, and a tour of Dr. Phil Koehler's lab at the University
of Florida. Future sessions include the UF Fumigation School in November, 2014 Expo
in January and the Legislative Tour in Tallahassee. Leadership FPMA will groom new
industry leaders and introduce them to virtually all aspects of the pest management
profession. Many personal thanks to Marcie Downing and Sean Brantley, both graduates
of the Wedgworth Leadership Institute of the University of Florida, for developing and
conducting the Leadership FPMA sessions. For more information about Leadership
FPMA concept, please see the dedicated FPMA Leadership page on the FPMA website
(www.flpma.org/about FPMA/Leadership FPMA).
Planning is in high gear for the 2014 Pest and Lawn Care Expo, January 20-w4 at the
beautiful new Embassy Suites Conference Center in Lake Buena Vista. We will gather
and network at the Expo Golf Classic at Falcon's Fire Country Club, the Bugs and Blues
Bash at Downtown Disney's House of Blues and at every break in the packed program!
Check out the latest in products, technologies and services in the new and expanded
Exhibit Hall. We will feature even more companies in a new, inviting floor layout. You
will be a better business by walking the Exhibit Hall and discovering how to deliver
new services, operate more efficiently and become more profitable.
Education offers something for everyone, with Marathon Data Pestpac-specific
sessions, and separate sales/marketing, finance/management and "current issues" tracks,
which will include sponsor-led presentations on water quality, pollinator protection and
pyrethroid labeling changes.
Expo CEUs will feature well-known consultant Jeff Tucker delivering WDO
CEUs; L&O CEUs by weed scientist Dr. Ramon Leon of UF; GHP and Core CEUs by
Dr. Koehler and his graduate students and Fumigation CEUs by the FPMA Fumigation
Expo will also offer a Research Symposium to connect researchers with possible
sponsors of research from manufacturers. FPMA is working with the Florida
