Pavement Preservation Journal - Fall 2016 - 23 The typical SPS-11 project layout (applies to all treatments) is illustrated in Fig. 2, while an example SPS-12 project layout is illustrated in Fig. 3 for diamond grinding treatments. While the layout of test sections on a project site must be adjusted to site conditions, the rule of thumb is that at least 1.5 miles of a relatively consistent pavement structure with little to no intersections, driveways, sharp horizontal curves, subsurface drainage features, bridges, speed limit changes, cut/fill transitions, vertical grades, and other features which could influence the performance of the test sections being studies is desired. This length could increase if agency specified supplemental test sections are proposed. In all cases, test sections are established in the outside lanes only. exPeriment stAtus Both the experimental design and materials sampling and testing (MS&T) plans have been completed for the LTPP pavement preservation experiments. Other documents being completed now include the following: * Project nomination guidelines: provide information, guidelines and forms for nominating candidate projects for acceptance in the LTPP preservation experiments * Construction guidelines: present the recommended guidelines for the construction and inspection of the treatments for LTPP preservation experiments * Construction data collection requirements: present the recommended guidelines for the collection of construction data for LTPP preservation experiments * Performance monitoring guidelines: detail the required performance monitoring requirements for the LTPP preservation experiments, e.g., distress surveys, deflection testing, profile and texture surveys, joint sealant condition surveys, and surface friction surveys * Other data collection requirements: details data collection needs for the LTPP preservation experiments beyond those covered by the MS&T plans, construction data collection requirements, and performance monitoring guidelines, e.g., traffic, climate, subgrade moisture, snow removal and deicing, ground penetrating radar (GPR) and Magnetic Imaging Tools (MIT) Scan-2 data. Final versions of these documents are anticipated by October 2016. Project imPLementAtion As many as 48 projects - eight projects per treatment, covering a wide range of climate and traffic conditions - will be established as a part of the LTPP pavement preservation experiment effort. At each project, several supplemental treatments could be placed by the participating agency in addition to the core project treatment. Selection of the LTPP Pavement preservation projects could begin as early as the summer of 2017, depending on funding availability. FHWA anticipates that funding will be provided via two separate pooled-fund studies, one for the asphalt treatments and another one for the concrete treatments. However it is likely that construction will not take place until 2018.
