He flew to Singapore and parts of Europe and the Middle East in search of a technology that would purify water, at a reasonable cost, without stripping it of its minerals. "What we'd been looking for around the world was right here in my backyard," Serrie said. In 2005, Serrie read a newspaper story that described the Homespring ultrafiltration system, then owned by Zenon, which Canada's Disaster Assistance Response Team was bringing from home to Sri Lanka and India to purify water for those affected by the 2004 tsunami catastrophe. The Homespring was being used during a disaster, but Serrie said it had more practical and environmental purposes. "Every city in the world suffers from the effects of aged infrastructure," said Serrie, the CEO and managing partner of Building Water Solutions, North America's largest distributor of Homespring, which is now owned by General Electric. "The public has responded by purchasing billions of dollars of after-market water products from water coolers, bottled water, fridge filters, tap filters, jug filters, under-sink singlefaucet systems and other assortments of protection. These products serve to offer only limited protection, they cost a fortune, they end up in MADY is one of many builders that have partnered with BWS.
