TWO INDUSTRY GIANTS
DESERVE THEIR HONOURS
HERE ARE A lot of great moments to be enjoyed at the BILD Awards every year, and this year's 34th
annual edition was no different.
This edition of Toronto Builder will take you through all the diverse winners, so I'd like to take this
opportunity to congratulate the winners of two of the individual awards.
These individuals are both longtime industry champions who deserve all of the accolades that they receive.
I'm talking about Peter Gilgan, founder and CEO of this year's Builder of the Year, Mattamy Homes, and David
Klugsberg, the president and chief operating officer of L.A. Inc. As Chair of this great Association, I count myself
very fortunate to rub shoulders with such great individuals.
Let's start with Peter.
It was a privilege to stand alongside Stephen Dupuis' wife Linda and present the Stephen Dupuis Community
Building Award to Peter. This honour recognizes the charity or community efforts made by a member of our industry,
engaged in BILD's charitable events and influencing others to do more for their community.
It's well known that Peter provided the largest gift to a pediatric hospital in Canadian history when he donated
By Steve Upton,
$40 million to the Hospital for Sick Children. He has generously given to other causes such as Ryerson University's
Mattamy Athletic Centre and the new Oakville hospital. He also established a scholarship program for post-secondary
students who are YMCA Youth Leaders.
What's not as well known about the father of eight is that he is an avid supporter of cycling charity events as a
donor and rider. Aside from being involved in Stephen's Ride for Humanity, Peter has hosted the Tour de Bleu for nine
years ,which raises more than $4.5 million, and he has also been involved in other cycling events such as Andy's
Ride, the Hero Ride, the ride for the Darling Homes for Kids, the Tour de Halton and the Ride to Conquer Cancer.
Now, let's chat about David.
The announcement of his promotion as President and CEO occurred only days before the night he was called
to the stage, completely unaware of the fact that his staff nominated him for the Riley Brethour Award - presented
to him by his friend and colleague, Andy Brethour.
The Riley Brethour Award is presented to an individual that provides outstanding and consistent professional
achievement in residential sales and marketing, including outstanding leadership and involvement with BILD.
While David is one of our industry's true characters, he is also a gentleman and a passionate advocate of BILD.
His positive attitude and long-standing expertise allows him to motivate, inspire and maintain quality, enduring
relationships with clients. Meanwhile, his dedication to BILD is unquestionable: he is a former member of BILD's
board, he has spoken at events, participated in panel discussions, and attended retreats and professional building
seminars. He has represented L.A. Inc. at many events, but also has spoken on behalf of the industry through
various media channels.
Both of these men are very worthy recipients of their respective awards. Both deserve all of the praise that they
receive, and I am only too pleased to express my own admiration for them.
Congratulations, Peter and David. You are inspiring industry champions.
