House Bill 300, which passed both the House and the Senate, will create four new "associate" State Court judges, also to be initially appointed by Governor Deal. It is estimated that these judges will handle approximately 100,000 cases within this division. The associate judges will serve four year terms and will be up for election in 2016, with the new term beginning January 2017. The initial senior associate judge will be selected by the current presiding state court judge. No associate judge shall be eligible to serve as a presiding judge over the state court. According to the bill, all cases involving traffic violations within DeKalb County will be assigned to this division.
