IS PEOPLE!

Why a Culture of Innovation?
Why should companies care about cultivating innovation? Innovation is more
than growth, it's survival! And building a culture of innovation is all about
your people.
According to McKinsey, 84% of executives agree that innovation is an important part of their growth strategy but only
6% are happy with their company's innovation performance. Innovation drives
growth and stories of companies that have
innovated successfully (hey Google and
3M, we're looking at you!) inspire other
organizations to delve deeper into their
innovation practices and, more importantly, outcomes. In Canada, our GDP has
been relatively flat for years so increasing
innovation is kind of a big deal.
In a world of accelerated change, innovation is also survival. New companies reach
Fortune 500 scale two times faster than
companies did two decades ago. Disruptive
companies with new business models compete with traditional players. Companies
(and even categories of companies) falter
when their leaders either fail to recognize, or
fail to act on changing market needs, trends
and the new business models enabled
by technology.
So if innovation is survival, what if the
secret to sustained growth already existed
in your organization? What would it mean
to your company and your financials if

you accessed and acted on the ideas of
your people?

Innovation is People: Cultivating
a Culture of Innovation
A culture of innovation = survival.
Innovation is people (not technology or
funding by itself); that's why innovation is crucial for scalable growth and,
ultimately, survival.
When Apple came up with the Mac, IBM
was spending at least 100 times more on
R&D. As Steve Jobs said about innovation, "It's not about money. It's about the
people you have, how you're led, and how
much you get it."
Innovation is people: who they are,
how they're inspired, how they're managed and most of all, what they collectively and collaboratively achieve. People
Operations (People Ops), also known
as Human Resources, plays a key role
in cultivating a culture of innovation.
People Ops needs to help change the way
people work by harnessing technology
to create an employee experience internally that matches both external experiences, (it's hard to streamline your life
using technology and come to work and
fill out, yikes, paper forms!!) and customer experiences (let's say it again:
awesome employee experiences enable
amazing customer experiences!), enable
employee collaboration, harness employee
