small business lending capabilities,
both of which have been opposed by
the banking industry in lawsuits.
"By taking the fight out of the halls of
Congress and into the regulatory arena,
the credit unions have required that we
fight back with litigation," Merski said.
"And that's a fight we'll continue to fight."
When asked whether credit union
tax exemption might be addressed in
upcoming Congressional tax reform
efforts, Williston expressed his doubts.
"I don't think this President has the
desire to raise taxes on any industry,
much less one whose 'membership' is
comprised of the military, firefighters,
police officers and teachers," Williston
said.
"Credit unions are facing the same
regulatory burden as community banks,"
Williston added, "and this is one time
that we need to work with them to get
something done."
Merski, on the other hand, was committed to raising the issue.
"Every time we have a discussion
about credit unions, we have to raise
the issue that they essentially act like
commercial banks with none of the tax
liabilities," Merski explained. "Even if
it's not tenable to get them taxed at this
juncture, we'll never stop pointing out
the inequity of how they're treated."
With these and other issues on
the table, IBAT now takes its message

from the membership to the halls of the
Texas Capitol in Austin and Capitol Hill
in Washington, D.C.
"Hopefully, next year we'll be on this
tour having a great celebration," Williston

said. "This industry deserves every win it
can get."
