IIE Network - Spring 2014 - (Page 45) Kacenga, continued from page 38 of increasing globalization, has put the onus on education administrators to think outside the standard admissions-committee model to create and deliver the educational 'goods' sought after by a complex cosmopolitan generation of students. The Not So Final Frontier Colorado remains in the frontier-not just in the 'Wild West' or the beautiful setting of the Rocky Mountains-but in the effort to perceive the ever-shifting edge in international education so as to remain relevant, solvent, and on mission. Internationalenrollment management strategy is a moving target, and collaboration across departments is necessary to achieve the success that awaits in the coming years. For many students in Colorado and in other regions of the United States, formative exposure to the world occurs in an academic setting. A classmate from another hemisphere, a roommate from Hearn, continued from page 40 and commitment, and international university networks and partnerships can play both an experimental and an experiential lead in pioneering the models for the future, serving as a test laboratory for success. To close on a personal observation based on experience: if you don't want to really play, stay away. Nothing is as deadly as a lukewarm partner. The difference of success and failure in international university networks, as in much of life, is (i) you must share the passion for the challenge; (ii) you must commit for some years to invest and give time for the return of investment - which will come; (iii) leaders must lead in focusing objectives and backing the strategies with appropriate resources (which will soon more than pay for themselves); (iv) the culture of the university must evolve to embrace internationalization at all levels, including awareness, promotion and promotions; and (v) make it a two-way street with your international partners. The rewards are the future of international higher education and research and our core responsibility to the next generation of researchers and leaders. ■ John Hearn is the Executive Director of the Worldwide Universities Network, Chairman of Australia Africa Universities Network, and Professor of Physiology at University of Sydney Medical School. another continent, an idea from another culture causes expansion of thought and boundaries. This is what international education delivers to students and communities. While it is a noble goal, not every institution can meet the American Council on Education Center for Internationalization and Global Engagement's model (Acenet.edu) with a fully developed internationalized curriculum, learning outcomes, and student mobility objectives. Where international education can escape being a derivative of a domestic admission office or the afterthought in the desk drawer of a tenured professor with worldly ambitions, is in the genuine opportunity to craft a tactical mission apt to the context of the institution, its faculty and students, and the community that it seeks to serve. ■ George F.
