Soaring the skies is just the beginning
for CEO Keri Wright

Sitting down for a chat with Keri Wright is
more like reuniting with an old friend than
meeting an esteemed aviation executive for
the first time. In her trademark sincere and
authentic manner, she tells the story of her
ascent from a teenager seeking a place to
belong, to owner and chief executive officer
of Universal Asset Management (UAM) - an
industry-leading global aircraft asset management, aftermarket component sales
and disassembly organization. But don't
equate her affable demeanor to a laid-back
approach to business. Keri set her eyes on
the skies years ago, and she's not slowing
down anytime soon.
Keri tracks her aviation lineage back to a
single teenage moment. It all started when
she got the flying bug. "My dad took me to
air shows, and I saw a chick hop out of an
F-16 when I was 15 years old, and I thought,
'That is cool. I want to do that,'" Keri said.
For the then six-foot-tall young woman
with "the confidence of a gnat," airplanes
were an escape. "I was the awkward girl. I
was picked on and made fun of, and airplanes
were the place to go for freedom," she said.
"No one could tell me what to do. There were
no speed limits or stop signs. You just go."
After asking for lessons for Christmas, she
earned her commercial, instrument, multiengine and flight instructor certificate by
the time she was 18 and was teaching flying lessons when she was a sophomore in
college.
Now, at 33 years old, her business is one of
the largest certified women-owned enterprises
in Tennessee. The company was selected as a
2015 Inc. 5000 recipient and an Impact 50
recipient, recognizing the top women-owned
businesses from the prestigious Inc. 5000 list.
