I'm probably not going to go down as the expert on career planning,
by the way, but it worked out well for me. I've been really blessed
to do something that I've loved my entire life.
everyone in this global industry should
be actively working to promote open and
fair commerce.
Jetrader: What's your view on industry
consolidation? Is it a positive or negative for the industry?
JK: There were arguments made way
back in 1978 - when Alfred Kahn initiated
airline deregulation in the U.S. - that
there would ultimately be consolidation.
The thinking was that more and more airlines would proliferate because of deregulation, which is what happened, but then
that there would be consolidation at the
end of the day. That happened too, of
course. I would argue that it has been
good for the consumer. They're getting a
good product and a good value at the end
of the day. They have choices in almost all

cases, and airlines today are much more
economically viable than they were 10, 20
or 30 years ago. Airlines today are more
professionally run than they've ever been
and their bottom lines reflect that.
Jetrader: I know you serve on various
boards of directors, most of which are
aviation related, but you also sit on the
National World War II Museum's board.
How did that come about?
JK: It's personal for me. My father
entered the Navy in WWII at the age of 16.
It was a traumatic time for the world, and
for our young men and women in uniform,
including my dad. The experience left a
deep impression on him and he wanted
to contribute something positive to society as a result. I was not in the military,
but his motivation motivated me. Two

friends on the Board, Bruce Whitman of
FlightSafety and Dave Hess of Pratt &
Whitney, got me involved, and I am fortunate now to be in a position where I can
help the Museum in its continuing mission
to educate visitors about the 60 million
people whose lives were directly and
irreparably impacted by WWII.
Jetrader: Beyond the industry growth
that we talked about earlier, during
your time in aviation, you've seen
ISTAT also grow tremendously. From
your perspective, can you point to any
particular factors that contributed to
ISTAT's growth?
JK: The appraisers' programs obviously
have set the standard for the industry. I
guess if I had to pick a couple of factors, I'd
say networking and education. If you look
