The Brabazon flying over the Farnborough airshow, September 1949.

By mid-1947, however, the single Brabazon Mk I was coming
together. It would be powered by eight Bristol Centaurus radial
engines buried inside the wings. They would be joined together
in pairs, with each pair driving into a gearbox, which would
drive two concentric power shafts, powering contra-rotating
propellers. The system worked well as planned, but with the
radial engines buried inside, the wings would have to be nearly
seven feet thick, resulting in more drag than would be the case
with thinner wings.

At last, more than a year late, on 4 September 1949, the prototype Brabazon Mk I made its maiden flight, and four days later
flew to Farnborough to be displayed at the annual air show there.
Shortly thereafter, a flight test campaign began, which would
guide the development of the prototype Brabazon Mk II. At the
time, the aircraft was roughly half-built. When asked when a
production Mk II might be delivered to BOAC, Bristol's estimate
was, "Some time, perhaps 1954."
The issue of Flight distributed after the Farnborough show
included a proud commemorative section of approximately
30  pages celebrating the Brabazon's progress. Ironically, the
next two pages were devoted to the Avro Canada Jetliner that
was already in flight test, followed by other pages covering the
de Havilland Comet that was also in flight test. In retrospect,
the juxtaposition of these two new jet airliners against a not-yet
built, slow-as-molasses Brabazon Mk II was probably the beginning of the end.
While not progressing as quickly as the British and Canadian
jets, the U.S. manufacturers were also about to develop jet airliners of their own. The likely contenders seemed to be Douglas and
Lockheed, with Convair and Boeing also in the running. Boeing,
in particular, suggested they could have a prototype jet transport
